Phonics at the Zoo is a nationally known curriculum for students 3yrs-1st grade. Some schools in the Gilbert district use this curriculum. It is a program that teaches letters and sound recognition by using fun animals and corresponding movements for those animals. Songs, finger plays and crafts assist in learning. Most children I have attend a session will learn their letters and sounds by the end of a session! My Phonics at the Zoo Pre-K class is designed to be a school year program. Children may register for each Gilbert session throughout the year. Weekly themes, learning Spanish and sign language are offered along with Math, and Handwriting Without Tears program. When the child is ready I offer beginning reading using the Starfall Reading Program at which time they have one-on-one time with me each class to assist in their reading journey. Starting this fall, my Pre-K class will be 3 hours long on Mon, Wed, and Fri. (9-Noon) so I may have more individual time with my students working on letters, sounds, and journaling for language development.
New this year, we will have a class mascot, Oscar Owl, who will share his knowledge with us about various animals and things we can learn about different parts of the world. Each child will be able to take Oscar home for a visit during the session! You can click on the right to learn more about Phonics at the Zoo program.
I have been teaching Pre-K (and previously Kindergarten) for the past 18 years and LOVE my job!

Carnival Days Lots of Fun!
We had a great time last week playing Carnival in our class. We used tickets to play games and win prizes, even stuffed animals! We tried ring toss, pompom bucket toss, tightrope walking, face painting and many fun crafts. Our snacks were fun too! Peanuts, cotton candy (just a couple of bites), popcorn and animal crackers! The parachute was most popular (until Friday when it was snow cones and "Pie in the face" day!) Happy new school year to all my students.....Daniel, Ryan, David, Reese, Diesel, Kaylee, Andres, Alleandro, Raleigh! Have a great year!
Photo Booth!
Yummy treats and good fine motor activities opening those peanuts!
Parachute with balloons - a BIG hit!
Crafts and Facepaint fun...
AND THE GRAND FINALE......SNOW CONES AND PIES IN THE FACE! (totally their idea~)
